저는 2017년 11월 세부에 위치한 PILAedu에서 영어 공부를 시작했습니다. 학원에 도착해 보니, 규모가 그다지 크진 않았지만 지어진 지 얼마 안 된 건물이라는 걸 알게 됐죠. 침대는 정말 편안했고 학생 각자는 방에 저마다의 옷장과 책상을 배정받았습니다. 이런 좋은 환경 덕에 공부에 더욱 집중할 수 있었어요.

학원에서의 첫 일정으로 제 영어 실력을 파악하기 위한 입학 시험을 치뤘고, 이 시험 결과를 바탕으로 교재를 지급받았습니다. 하지만 수업이 너무 쉽거나, 혹은 너무 어려울 경우를 위해 5일의 조정 기간도 주어진답니다.

처음 학교에 왔을 때 제 영어 수준은 정말 낮았습니다. 다행히도 제가 만난 모든 선생님들은 인내심과 책임감이 있었어요. 발음을 교정해 줄 뿐만 아니라 매 수업 후에는 제가 어떤 실수를 했는지 확인할 수 있도록 적어주기도 했죠. 개인적으로 문법 부분이 특히 약했는데, 선생님들이 인내를 가지고 문장 구조를 하나 하나 친절하게 알려줬어요.

학업 초반에는 쑥쓰러워서 말도 잘 못 꺼냈는데, 원어민 혹은 필리핀 선생님에 관계 없이 모두 쾌활하고 재미있었습니다. 수업을 받는 동안 긴장감 없이 편안함을 느낄 수 있었고 저는 점차 영어로 말할 수 있는 자신감을 갖게 되었어요.

평일에는 학업에 열중했지만, 주말에는 쇼핑을 나가거나 액티비티를 즐길 수 있었습니다. 택시를 타면 편하게 어디든 갈 수 있었죠. 다른 학생들과 함께 날루수안 섬에서 아일랜드 호핑을 했던 날은 잊지 못할 거예요. 처음에는 스노클링을 잘할 수 있을까 걱정도 했지만, 실제로 형형색색의 물고기들을 보니 제가 마치 인어가 된 느낌이었어요. 아름다운 경관을 마음껏 즐겼고 떠날 때가 되니 많이 아쉬웠습니다.

솔직히 말하자면, 돌아가기 전에 PILAedu에서의 생활을 정말 즐기고 있었어요. 이곳에서의 경험들 덕에 잊지 못할 좋은 추억들을 많이 만들었거든요. 수료식이 있던 날에는 선생님들에게 선물도 많이 받았는데 그땐 정말 여기서 공부를 더 하고 싶다고 생각했어요. 다른 나라의 여러 친구들을 만들 수 있었을 뿐만 아니라 제 영어 실력도 많이 늘어서일까요. 물론 선생님들도 훌륭했고요.

영어 실력을 늘리기 위해서는 해외 연수가 가장 빠르고 효과적이라고 생각해요. 여행과 학습을 통해 꾸준히 실력을 향상시키고 자신의 시야를 넓히는 게 중요하답니다!

I started to learn English in PILAedu last November 2017 in Cebu. After arriving in the school, I found out that although the school is not very big, the facilities are very new. The beds are very comfortable and each student has their own wardrobe and desk in their room. This gives us a good environment to focus on our studies.

During the first day of school, there was an entrance test to check my English level, and depending on the score of the test, the school will provide textbooks. But we are given 5 days to apply to change to a different level, if we find the lessons either too easy or too difficult for us.

When I came to here, my English level was basic. Luckily, my teachers are very patient and responsible. They not only corrected my pronunciation, they also noted down my mistakes so that I could review every after class. Personally, my grammar was particularly poor, but the teachers were very patient and taught me proper sentence structure step by step.

At the beginning, I was very shy to speak up, but regardless whether the teachers are native speakers or Filipino teachers, they are very amiable and humorous. In their classes I felt very relaxed and comfortable, and slowly I started to be confident to speak more and more.

I did not only study from Monday to Friday, but I also went out for shopping and entertainment on the weekends. It is very convenient to take taxis from the school to anywhere. I can’t forget the Island hopping experience in Nalusuan. I joined other students in this outing. At first, I was very nervous to go snorkeling but when I saw a lot of colorful fishes, I felt like I was a mermaid. I really enjoyed the beautiful scenery and I didn’t want to leave.

Honestly, before leaving, I am starting to like to live in PILAedu. My experience gave me a lot of memorable and pleasant memories. During the graduation ceremony, when I received gift from my teachers, I really wanted to stay and study longer. In PILAedu, I not only made a lot of friends from other countries, but I also improved my English level. Importantly I have a lot of great teachers.

In my opinion, to study abroad is the best and fastest way to improve my English skills. People should continuously improve and broaden their horizons by learning and traveling.
